In this presentation, Dr. Ambrose discusses bacteriophages, the most abundant naturally occurring life forms. Bacteriophages are widely distributed in water, soil, animals and humans and consumed daily in common foods. There are 10 to the 32 phages in the world, and 10 to the 31 bacteria. They are in the Ganges, the Seine, Danube, and Columbia Rivers. In your house, they are most abundant in your sponges.

Bacteriophages are viruses that can only infect bacterial cells, replicate there, and cause the destruction of the bacterium. These phages are highly target-specific — activity is confined to a very limited number of strains of bacteria. They provide a non-host derived sort of immunity.  These lytic phages are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) through review of published scientific literature and based on their common widespread presence, with some having been approved by the FDA for use in foods to control food borne pathogens. They were fairly widely used worldwide in the 1920s-40s, after which they stopped being used in the US because of penicillin.

Very specific phages classify as prebiotics.  Others are very effective at killing pathogenic bacteria. We will overview history, identification, and use of these phages clinically, and how to attain them.
