This 90-minute PreCON workshop tackles one of the most frustrating presentations in clinical practice: the constipation case that has tried everything and remains stuck. Dr. Nesreen Hassan walks attendees through a naturopathic root-cause framework for six mechanistically distinct subtypes, including slow transit neuromotility dysfunction, pelvic floor dyssynergia, SIBO and dysbiosis-driven dysmotility, thyroid and hormonal drivers, dysautonomia overlap, and medication-induced constipation. Using de-identified case vignettes and structured small-group discussion, attendees practice applying the subtype framework to real clinical scenarios before leaving the room. Participants leave with a subtype differential checklist and a treatment sequencing framework grounded in the naturopathic therapeutic order, ready for immediate clinical use.
Dr. Nesreen Hassan is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner based in Oakville, Ontario, where she runs Cure Integrative Clinic, a practice focused on complex chronic disease and GI dysfunction. Her clinical background spans three countries and three decades, beginning with her medical degree and PhD in Pulmonary Medicine in Egypt, followed by a Clinical and Research Fellowship at McMaster University, and completed with her Doctor of Naturopathy at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. She holds advanced training in all core Institute for Functional Medicine modules and brings a uniquely integrative lens to gut health, combining functional diagnostics, naturopathic principles, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. At GastroANP 2026, Dr. Hassan will present a root-cause framework for the constipation cases that won't budge, drawn directly from her clinical experience with complex, multi-driver presentations.

Disorders of gut–brain interaction (DGBIs), including irritable bowel syndrome and functional abdominal pain, are among the most common conditions seen in gastroenterology, and many patients continue to experience symptoms despite standard medical care. This presentation introduces GI psychology and explains how evidence-based gut–brain therapies can improve digestive symptoms across the lifespan. Attendees will learn about the gut–brain axis, the mechanisms behind symptoms like pain, bloating, and urgency, and the research supporting gut-brain therapies (i.e., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for GI and gut-directed clinical hypnosis). The session also reviews practical strategies for integrating these treatments into GI care, including patient selection, treatment planning, communication strategies, and interdisciplinary collaboration. A real-world case study will illustrate how gut–brain therapies can improve outcomes and provide attendees with a clinically grounded framework for applying these approaches in practice.
Dr. Anna Katherine Black is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and conditions involving the gut–brain axis. She focuses on evidence-based gut–brain therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy for GI conditions and gut-directed clinical hypnosis, to help patients with disorders of gut–brain interaction such as IBS and functional abdominal pain. Dr. Black is particularly passionate about working with complex, multifaceted cases where symptoms are driven by dysregulation across biological, psychological, and nervous system pathways. Her clinical work emphasizes restoring regulation, reducing visceral hypersensitivity, and supporting whole-person healing through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Our pre-conference event is an opportunity to get more in-depth learning with experts in the field.
Pre-Con is not included in main conference registration.

Chronic intestinal bloating remains a complex clinical challenge, often persisting despite standard Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) treatments. This session moves beyond a SIBO-centric model to explore the overlapping roles of abdomino-phrenic dyssynergia, visceral hypersensitivity, and Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth (SIFO). Attendees will learn to utilize validated clinical tools to clearly differentiate between gas-volume issues and sensory-motor dysfunction. The presentation will outline evidence-based naturopathic interventions, including the strategic use of prokinetics, diaphragmatic breathing, spore-based probiotics, and peptide therapies for mucosal repair. Finally, through case studies exploring complex constipation and dysautonomia, participants will walk away with a clear diagnostic algorithm and a practical, "Monday-ready" toolkit.
Dr. Tyler Wuthmann is a Naturopathic Physician at Peninsula Integrative in Palo Alto, CA. The fundamental premise of naturopathic medicine is that humans evolved to be self-healing organisms. This capacity is dependent on living according to the laws of the biosphere, or “Nature”, by establishing the conditions for health. This includes appropriate nutrition and digestive function. This talk will present the rationale for restoring the integrity and function of the gastrointestinal tract as an essential component of most treatment plans.
Dr. Louise Edwards graduated from National College of Naturopathic Medicine, 1988 and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, 1989. She had a full time private practice in Durango, CO until 2005 when she chose to primarily focus on teaching and writing. She was an adjunct faculty member at National University of Health Sciences and currently at Bastyr University focusing on Naturopathic Clinical Theory, Case Analysis and Case Management. She is a frequent presenter at conferences. Dr. Edwards in a founding member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and has received the AANP’s “Vis Award” in 2011 and “Benedict and Louisa Lust Award” in 2021.

This presentation will review and expand on not-so-easy constipation cases. The three main categories discussed will be slow transit constipation, normal transit constipation (also called functional constipation) and outlet constipation (rectal dyssynergia). I will especially focus on the latter since I find that dyssynergia and its proper diagnosis and treatment are not generally understood. These different types of constipation require very differently treatment from one another to have success. In contrast to the slow transit type, outlet constipation/rectal dyssynergia occurs when the sphincter muscles in the anorectum are too tense or uncoordinated in their contraction/relaxation with the rectal muscle contractions.
Dr. Steven Sandberg-Lewis has been a practicing naturopathic physician since his graduation from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in 1978. He has been a clinical supervisor and didactic professor at NUNM since 1996, focusing on pathology, Naturopathic gastroenterology and GI physical medicine. His private practice is at Hive Mind Medicine in Portland, Oregon (www.hivemindmedicine.org).
His newest book, Let’s Be Real About Reflux: Getting to the Heart of Heartburn, is written for both health practitioners and patients. It is a deep dive into underlying mechanisms and natural treatment of gastroesophageal reflux. -

Pediatric constipation remains one of the most common yet frustrating concerns in pediatric GI care, particularly when symptoms persist despite otherwise appropriate treatment strategies. This session reframes pediatric constipation, emphasizing the distinct sensory, autonomic, behavioural, and emotional factors that shape symptom persistence in children. Particular attention will be given to chronic holding patterns, visceral sensitivity, dysbiosis, and the ways stress physiology influences motility, pain perception, and treatment response. Participants will refine their ability to recognize constipation-driven presentations and better differentiate primary motility and regulatory patterns from secondary downstream findings.
Amy Rolfsen, ND is a licensed naturopathic physician with a clinical focus in pediatric and gastrointestinal care. She works extensively with children experiencing constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, feeding challenges, and functional digestive disorders. Her work frequently involves neurodivergent children, where GI symptoms intersect with sensory processing, autonomic regulation, and stress physiology. Dr. Rolfsen is passionate about helping clinicians better understand complex pediatric GI presentations through practical, family-centered care strategies.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) remain significant global public health challenges despite universal screening, prevention strategies, and treatments, affecting an estimated 0.8-2.4 million and 2.4-4.0 million people in the United States alone, respectively. Both can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver-related mortality. Recent advances in screening strategies, diagnostic approaches, and therapeutic options have transformed the landscape of viral hepatitis management. The availability of highly effective, well-tolerated therapies for both HBV and HCV, combined with expanded screening recommendations, positions healthcare providers to significantly reduce the burden of viral hepatitis. Highlighting recent evidence, clinical practice guidelines, and interactive case studies, this review seeks to increase clinician knowledge and comfort in the prevention, diagnosis and management of these conditions.

Long COVID is often treated as an immune, neurologic, or hormonal condition but many patients remain stuck because the gut barrier never fully healed. In this presentation, Dr. Christina Carew, ND, explores how ongoing intestinal permeability can keep the immune system locked in a chronic threat response, driving symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, food sensitivities, histamine reactions, and post-exertional crashes. Using a functional and systems-based lens, she breaks down why leaky gut in Long COVID behaves differently than typical digestive concerns, why women are disproportionately affected, and why aggressive treatment approaches often backfire. Attendees will leave with practical, clinically relevant strategies to identify gut-driven Long COVID patterns and apply a gut-first, barrier-repair approach that helps patients move forward in healing.
Dr. Christina Carew, ND, is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, functional medicine educator, and founder of HealingMe.Health and co host of Team Gut Girls Podcast. Known for turning complex health “mumbo-jumbo” into practical, relatable strategies, she helps patients and practitioners uncover the root causes behind chronic symptoms by connecting the dots between gut health, hormones, stress physiology, and environmental medicine.

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common gastrointestinal infections worldwide. When present, H. pylori infection in the upper GI tract can lead to both peptic ulcers and gastritis. Despite the widespread adoption of antibiotic protocols to treat this infection over the past 30 years, there is still a need for alternative treatment options - due to growing antibiotic resistance and resultant treatment failure, but also the negative repercussions of triple and quadruple therapy on the gastrointestinal tract microbiota. In this presentation, Dr Hawrelak will review the research on probiotic, herbal, and nutritional interventions utilized to eradicate H. pylori and outline a H. pylori case with successful eradication using a combination of specific herbal medicines, probiotics, and dietary interventions in a previously antibiotic-resistant patient.
Dr Hawrelak is a researcher, educator, Western herbalist, and naturopath with over 25 years’ clinical experience. He did his PhD examining the capacity of probiotics, prebiotics and herbal medicines to modify the gastrointestinal tract microbiota and teaches worldwide on the topics of microbiota modification, probiotics, and gut health. He has published extensively in these areas, including 20 textbook chapters. Jason is on the Medical Nutrition Council of the American Society for Nutrition, is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition and is a Life member of the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia. He is Lead Educator at the Microbiome Restoration Center and Chief Research Officer at ProbioticAdvisor.com.

During this session we will follow the infant microbiome with its sequential evolution and identify key protector and perturbing influences. Questions relating to where the infant acquires their microbes from, sustainable maternal sharing from multiple sites, and environmental acquisition of human-adapted microbes will be explored. The potential health functions of the different stages of microbiome development will be outlined, as well as strategies to help protect and nurture these stages. The dynamic nature of the infant microbiome presents challenges for assessment and decision- making around microbiome-related interventions. Timing for testing, and follow-up testing, will be explored; in particular following microbiome-disturbing events. Risk and benefit considerations and clinical reasoning behind targeted microbiome-focused interventions will be explored. We will look at strategies for nurturing the infant microbiomes’ healthful stages, optimising healthful microbe acquisition, and consider some of the cautions around probiotic prescribing in this population.
Dawn Whitten is a clinician, educator and researcher. She is passionate about protecting and nurturing the microbiome of the next generation and has a broad-base of clinical experience with a focus on women’s health through pregnancy and beyond, and infant and toddler health.
